Statement of Support for Our AAPI Community

In the wake of the shootings in Atlanta that left six Asian women and two others dead, and the rise in crimes against the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community, I want to state again that violence and racism have no place in our country or in our University community.

I’m deeply troubled by the increased attacks and hate against AAPIs, which we’ve all heard about on the news. As Comets, I encourage you and your community of friends, family and fellow students to avoid blaming AAPIs as being responsible for COVID-19. It’s simply not true. I remind you to stay alert and aware. Don’t ignore racism because it’s uncomfortable; call it out when you see it and denounce it in all forms.

I ask you to remember your Comet Creed, which many of you recited during your orientation with the University and that you may often see on a class syllabus: As a Comet, I pledge honesty, integrity and service in all I do.

Finally, if you’re searching for more information about race and gender programs available to you, or if you’d like to talk with someone, consider these campus resources:

The Multicultural Center
The Galerstein Gender Center
The Student Counseling Center

If you need to report an incident or crime against yourself or a fellow student, these areas are available to help:

Dean of Students
UTD Title IX Office
UTD Police

Thank you,
